Great Lake Shipwrecks

There has been much discussion lately about the digital revolution at the turn of the present millennium. Changes in the last century, however were probably far more dramatic to a person born in the middle of the 19th century than what we are seeing today. A person growing and living on the shore of one of the Great Lakes would have witnessed many dramatic revolutions in technology as economic conditions in transportation forced rapid changes in the types of ships and cargo plying the… Continue

New York City - Diving in the City that Never Sleeps

On a nice summer weekend on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, you might expect to see a few joggers, a line for bagels and lox at Barney Greengrass, or maybe the guy who delivers the Times. It's no wonder I always get a few odd looks from the doormen who see me pushing a luggage cart filled with steel 120s, a dry suit, and a camera big enough for its own car seat down the sidewalk in the early morning.

New… Continue

Sharks n' touch

To me, touching or petting a shark or any other marine creature is not an non-respectful way of interacting, in a few words in doesn't mean you are not respecting the animal. Of course animals shouldn't be chased or harmed, punched or anything like that, but touched is definitely not the same. Touching a shark isn't a problem as long as you respect it and don't grab it or pull it. I've had experience touching animals in the wild like turtles, rays, small sharks and even the enormous Whale Shark… Continue

Diving with Sharks

"We Dive, We Swim and We Interact"

Isabel Baquerizo

Why dive with sharks? Well its simple basically, because we can’t be more fascinated by these amazing creatures, well some of us, we just can’t resist to interact with these animals in the wild, encountering them face to face. Sharks Diving, I think, it’s an awesome experience because you have the opportunity to see sharks behavior, and their gracefulness. I personally believe that Diving with Sharks is not only about… Continue

A ‘privileged’ life beneath the seas

Whether it was working under water in the construction of docks, or later as a deck officer on ocean-going ships, the early days of Veljko Pesakovic’s career meshed nicely with his passion for scuba diving.

A young student in the naval academy in the former Yugoslavia at the time, Veljko’s diving training led to jobs, as well as recreational… Continue

New 7 Gill Shark Website for Divers and Researchers

Hi, all:

Mainly to due to the recent uptick in encounters between San Diego divers and Sevengill Sharks, I've set up a website site devoted exclusively collecting and collating Sevengill Shark data at:

http://sevengillsharksightings.org

As you'll see, it's still in a rather primitive form and there's no 'hard' scientific data yet, but I hope that in time, it will grow as a central… Continue

Best Diving Location--Your Opinion

I'm interested in knowing if you could take a job anywhere in the world that offers great scuba opportunities, where would you choose to go?

I am considering an international job (not diving--diving would remain a hobby), and would like to know the opinion of those of you who have actually dove in these various locations. Where could I go and never get tired of diving or where would there be a lot of places to dive?

I'm looking forward to your feedback.

Whales in Fiji

Today I witnessed the most amazing thing I have ever seen. Whales. Seeing these creatures in their natural environment is single handedly, without a doubt the greatest most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Earlier that morning I had been a guide for our guests. We went to Eagle Rock, one of our nearby dive sites, and saw 16 Grey Reef Sharks moving together in one big pack,… Continue

Shark Alliance Statement for Global Ocean policy Day !!

The Shark Alliance is marking Global Ocean Policy Day by calling on EU Fisheries Commissioner, Joe Borg, to strengthen one of the EU’s most important and far-reaching policies for sharks: the ban on "finning" (slicing off the fins and tossing the body at sea).

The EU is the lead supplier for the global shark fin trade, which is driven by demand for the Asian delicacy, shark fin soup. The EU finning ban is currently among the weakest in the world.

Species that dominate the… Continue

Amazing Close Encounter with Whale....Oh, and a Scripps Canyon Dive, too....[LONG]

Hi, all:

It's been a pretty long day and I'm beat, but I didn't want to let the day pass without sharing an absolutely amazing close encounter we had with a juvenile Grey Whale as well as a quick summary [HA!] of the dive.

Dive buddies: Barb, Dave H.and NOAA Jim

We headed out from Mission Bay Channel at around 9:30 this morning and made our way under beautiful sunny skies towards La Jolla--a marked contrast with the scowling, dark skies of the day… Continue
