Briana's Diving Ventures
Growing up, I had a love/hate relationship with the ocean. I love ocean fishing (particularly halibut, rockfish, and salmon), but I get seasick. The beach is pretty, but I hate the taste of saltwater and the feel of sand grinding into ever crack and crevice of my body. I always kind of thought snorkelling and scuba diving would be fun, but my preconceived ideas of the dangers of scuba diving of scared me to death.
In December of 2008, I had the opportunity to go to Puerto Morelos, Mexico, with my family, and that is where my passion for the ocean and its wildlife truly took root. Our hotel was about a block away from the beach. I bought my husband and I snorkelling equipment, determined to at least try it out, and I was blown away with the life that I saw just yards from the beach! I had no idea I could see so many different types of brilliant creatures in one place.
One day we took a boat out to the Grand Mayan Reef, the second largest barrier reef in the world and it was one of the most amazing things I have ever done. I'll admit, the thought of getting cut on coral was constantly in the back of my mind, but the experience was so amazing that I decided it was worth the risk.
Scuba diving still scares me to death, but it's something I want to do because it is unlike anything else you can experience in life. It may be a while before I can afford to get certified, but I am determined to do it. Currently my list of scuba diving goals include seeing sea turtles, which I didn't get to see in Mexico, and swimming with a whale shark. I know scuba diving is an expensive hobby, but I am determined to make it happen.
