Dive Strong!

I thought this might be a fun topic. I am sure all of you can relate at one time or another, who are into photography of that once in a life time shot that didn't happen because of some SNAFU. This is the place to share your stories.

One time I was diving a wall in Puget Sound that really didn't have much in they way of what I considered interesting photo opportunities. I was with a charter and decided to do the dive but left my camera on board. As I was dropping down the wall, I spotted a dark shape coming towards me. My first thought it was a 6 gill shark but when it came out of the gloom that's when I saw that it was a 5 foot long river sturgeon. It was a sight to behold seeing a prehistoric armored plated fish. Needless to say I was really kicking myself for not bring my camera. ARRRGH!!!

I know what you mean. For about 10 years I was using an Nikonos 3, which was the best and only OW Camera at that time..We were in the Maldives and did already some dives on the same reef and all we saw was some small things. For the next dive I decided to put on a Macroring, which on a Nikonos you have to add between the body and the lens.So I did and we went under. Than shit happened, after 10 minutes we saw Mantarays so close that we could touch them and all I could do was taking pictures of the eyes. After that holiday I get rid of the rings and used instead lenses which you could scew on underwater.

It just keeps getting better all the time : You don't bring the camera, your solo, and the unbeleveable happens and no one to show. You bring the camera , but the wrong lens , wrong Strobe , Should have the Video.
the good news is "Your just going tho have to keep diving" like we need a reason?
The best story's we tell are about our own screw ups.
like the frist time I made micro-wave pop-corn, I opened the bag ,plopted this greasy bar of corn on a plate and closed the door. The dog liked it.

There have been sightings of whale sharks in Anilao, Batangas in the Philippines but for some reason despite diving almost weekly, our group hasn't been as lucky as the others. So, we joke about it as being an urban legend. Until one fine day, on our 2nd dive of the day i left my camera on the boat since the batteries died out at the end of the previous dive. Lo and behold about 10-15 min into the dive i hear our lead diver banging his tank frantically and pointing out towards the blue. At first i couldn't see what he was pointing at. Then from out of the shadows a huge whaleshark came gliding in! We were all stunned at the size of it. The other divers had their cameras fortunately while i just absorbed every detail of it in my memory bank. Sheeesh!

Diving from a liveaboard in the Red Sea in January last year, the very first dive ( a 'soft' dive to give the dive guide a chance to assess everyone) we asked the guide what the chances were of seeing a whale shark. He replied that if we saw a whale shark at this time of the year we could shave all his hair off! I didn't bother taking the camera - after all it WAS just a shallow intro dive. The first thing we saw was the said whale shark - and I have the photo's showing the hair being removed ( in suitable clumps), but not unfortunately of the whale shark!

I had the perfect set-up: a Nikonos V with a 28mm lens, close-up kit and an SB30 strobe with fresh batteries on a night dive. All of a sudden I saw some commotion, then I saw the eel, then the eel had an octopus in his mouth. I was ready, as he turned his head into my framer with octopus tentacles hanging out on both sides, I fired. The strobe light on this scene left an image on my mind that I could clearly draw thirty years later. You will notice in the list of everything I had--that it did not include film.

Those are some of the worst things during the non digid period. Or you found out that your film is full.
By the way, how long did your V last. Mine broke down within a year, and I switched back to the old Nikonos 3, used till about 5 years ago and still have 2 of them.

Our Nikonos Vs lasted many years and we rented them forever. By the way, sorry for the delay--you can see how often I get into these forums and social sites. I enjoy them but run out of time!

Enjoy the journey,
Cathy
